At university level, the focus lies on teaching microscopic techniques. Especially in undergraduate practicals, the microscope doesn’t necessarily need to meet the highest industrial standards.
What matters is flexibility, allowing for basic contrast methods to be performed with ease.

The microscope should have a compact footprint, leaving enough workspace for sample preparation. And of course, budget constraints are always an important factor in academic procurement.

In more advanced stages of study, higher-quality microscopes should become available.
This includes, for example, inverted microscopes for analyzing cell cultures in cell biology. Even here, affordable models beyond the well-known brands should be considered to strike the right balance between functionality and cost.
