Microscopy in Middle School Biology Classes

Microscopy is a fascinating and powerful tool that plays a key role in biology education. Observing, analyzing, measuring, as well as collecting, comparing, classifying and identifying are core learning objectives closely tied to working with microscopes.
Inquiry-based learning becomes easy to implement when students can experiment independently using real microscopes.

By using microscopes, students gain insight into the world of cells, tissues and microorganisms, and develop a deeper understanding of the structure and function of living organisms.

Microscopic drawings help document and reflect on their observations. Students also learn how to handle accessories and practice microscopy with dry specimens, such as cork, hair, feathers or insect wings. In addition, they gain experience working with wet mounts, for example by observing protozoa in a hay infusion.
